Morning Routine Hack: Save 20 Minutes With DIY Lashes
20 minutes are precious. Ask every busy mom, corporate slave, and tired student. Those 20 minutes could be spent sleeping, eating, meditating, sleeping, exercising, and did we say sleeping already? Sleeping.
So, what can offer you flexibility? Funnily enough, your lashes.
False lashes take time when treated as a last-minute add-on. The trick is to get most of the fiddly work out of the morning and into a little prep work the night before. That way, you wake up with everything you need laid out in front of you, and all you need is a few seconds of finishing.
The best part? Stick to these mindful preparations, and you'll move faster and faster as you go along. It's like practising making perfect.
Save 20 Minutes with This Quick Beauty Routine
At the very beginning, it may seem tedious - even though this will genuinely save you time. Let's talk you through the routine first and then discuss how it can be a timesaver in a bit.
- Choose your set. Yes, decision fatigue can set in even early in the morning. Take all the thinking out and choose a style that matches your usual makeup. If you want natural, go wispy. If you want drama, choose volume.
- Fit and trim. Measure the strip against your lash line and trim the outer edge for a perfect fit. Doing this at night saves morning fumbling.
- Lay out everything. Place your adhesive, tweezers, spoolie, and mirror together so you can grab them without thinking. Either that or lay them all out on your vanity so all you have to do is apply.
Bonus Tip #1: Pre-glue. Apply a thin line of adhesive to the band and let it sit for 20 to 30 seconds until tacky. Place the lashes on a clean tray so they are ready to pick up. This is optional. Sometimes, even we forget that a lash has been pre-gued. So this can save time or make for a sticky surprise.
Bonus Tip #2: Clean and store. Remove any glue residue from the band and store lashes in their case. Like a chef knows how to clean as they go, minimal messes make life so much easier.
What To Do When You Already Have DIY Lashes On
Mornings are not always about fresh application. Sometimes you wake up with a set already in place, either from a late night or because you prefer to sleep in them for a day. It happens. We don't judge! Buuut… Here are some must-dos.
Check if the lashes are still on or loose.
If the lashes are still secure, a little reshaping helps remove any creases and controls stray fibres. If you see the band, a little liquid liner will do for concealment. Lastly, check if your lash has lifted. A touch of glue can hold until you take them off at the end of the day.
If the lashes feel loose or uncomfortable, we have to do some extra work. The best thing would probably be removing the lash and reapplying. No use saving a sinking ship, right? Luckily for you, you've done steps one to three mentioned earlier - so, it's now so much easier!
Draw the Line
Tips are recommendations, not rules. If something doesn't work, adapt! Here are some more good-to-knows as you perfect your quick beauty routines.
Sleeping with falsies on is not ideal daily. Eye irritations or, worse, infections could happen. Even your natural lashes might get damaged. That said, a single night is forgivable enough. Remove the lashes the next morning, clean them, and give your natural lashes a break for a day or two if possible.
Good hygiene is the best look. Yes, you can wash your face even when you have DIY lash extensions on. Cleanliness always suffers when you're in a rush, so the mindful habit of keeping things clean and in their place is always good. What are these habits? Wiping glue off the band immediately after removal, soaking reusable lashes in a gentle cleanser and air drying on a clean towel, using tweezers instead of your fingers… All easy and manageable.
Practice results in speed. The first few times you practise how to DIY lashes at home, expect it to take longer. That is totally normal. Give it a few days, maybe a week or two. You be the judge. If something just won't stick, then draw the line and change things up! Maybe reorganising, applying them in the car instead of at home… We adjust to what we need.
